They promise weight loss. But without a plan, GLP-1s can quietly become your biggest prescription care expense.

A recent Gallup poll found that 43% of Americans say they are overweight and 55% want to lose weight. The real number is likely even higher—particularly among working-age adults.

Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows diet and exercise are the proverbial David against the Goliath of poor food choices and desk-bound routines.

In fact, adults gain 1-2 pounds a year on average. That adds up fast, bringing an avalanche of debilitating, chronic, and expensive complications over the course of adulthood. From gallstones to heart disease, diabetes and even breast cancer, multiple studies emphasize the negative impact of being overweight on health.

The Human Resources Challenge

None of that should shock the modern human resources leader. Juggling the cost of health plans in the wake of an aging workforce facing many of these health issues has been a major pain point for benefits decision makers.

The advent of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, along with their obesity-labeled counterparts Wegovy and Zepbound has complicated things even more. On the surface, these simple shots pack a big yet expensive punch (more than $12,000 per person annually). They deliver rapid results but can inflate the cost of coverage even quicker.

Many large PBMs initially avoided GLP-1s due to cost. But as demand rose, they reversed course—often prioritizing highest-cost medications tied to rebate arrangements that benefit the PBM more than the plan sponsor.

In the face of soaring demand, covering the medication cost is expensive and potentially a waste of resources altogether if not done correctly. That’s why LucyRx built a smarter approach—before this became a budget crisis.

Our GLP-1 Weight Management Program is built to balance access and outcomes.  It helps employers deliver what everyone wants: healthier outcomes and a more sustainable bottom line.

The LucyRx Success Model

Everybody is different and deserves a personalized approach. Metabolism, habits, work-life-balance, injury, age, and gender are all part of the solution we create with our members beyond the prescription.

For example, we created menopause-specific pathways for midlife women – a population often left out of weight care conversations but deeply affected by obesity.  Personalization matters, because GLP-1s shouldn’t become a lifelong weight loss crutch.

The evidence is clear: while GLP-1s can help kick-start change, behavior change is the key to sustained success.

We studied a population of 11,000 employees over 18 months. Here’s what happened:

  • 22 pounds lost on average in just 12 weeks
  • 15% average weight reduction over 18 months
  • $289 saved per member on the weight loss program
  • 40% boost in medication adherence
  • 90% of participants reported better health and high satisfaction with the program

For the employer, that translated to $3.2 million in projected healthcare savings—driven by fewer costly interventions and better overall well-being.  And through our competitive sourcing strategy, members saved up to 54% on GLP-1 medications.  Not by denying access—but by managing it wisely.

This approach proves that short-term investment, paired with a 360-degree education and support program, delivers long-term results for people and for plans.
